Star Wars, later retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, was originally released in 1977, introduces t heworld to a group of young freedom fighters, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo an dtheir companion droids R2D2 and C3PO. We also meet the mysterious Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi and the evil Darth Vader. and would go on to earn over $800 million dollars worldwide, suprassing Jaws as the highest grossing film of its time. Written and directed by George Lucas, and set in a galaxy far far away, Star Wars is one of the most influential movies of all time, universally recognised for its ground breaking work in special effects. The movie itself would also go on to earn 10 Acadamy Award nominations, and win 7, including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actor (Alec Guinness as Obi Wan Kenobi).
Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, was originally released in 1980 to mixed reviews, it would go on to gross more than $500 million worldwide, being the highest grossingfilm of 1980. It has since become one of the most popular chapters in the Star Wars Saga, and also one of the highest rated films of all time. Notable moments are the introduction of the Jedi Master Yoda, the freezing of Han Solo in carbonite and stuning revelations that Darth Vader is Luke Skywalker’s father, and that there is another Skywalker. We also see Han Solo’s growing affection for Princess Leia and watch as Luke trains to become a Jedi Knight. A great story and cliff hanger ending guaranteed that the next chapter would be a must see.
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi was released in 1983 as the ‘final’ film in the original trilogy. The film earned over $475 million worldwide, and was thought to be the final release in the Star Wars Saga. Although we do learn that Darth Vader is indeed Luke’s father, the Emperor is defeated and the 2nd Death Star destroyed, the Ewoks (as far as I’m concerned) should have been left as Wookies (as Lucas originally intended) in order to be considered a realistic ally during the Battle on Endor.
What you may not know is that the original movie trailers referred to the film as Revenge of the Jedi. The title was changed only a few weeks before the movie’s release since Lucas did not consider revenge a trait appropriate to the Jedi. These teaser posters are now highly sought after (and very rare) collectors items.
The fourth film in the Star Wars Saga, Episode I: The Phantom Menace starts the prequel trilogy where we learn the history of young Annakin Skywalker, his relationship with Obi Wan Kenobi, Queen Amidala, Yoda, and of course the Emperor (or as he is known here, Senator/Chancellor Palpatine). Released in 1999, almost exactly 16 years after Return of the Jedi (and 22 yrs after the original Star Wars), The Phantom Menace would go on to gross over $900 million worldwide, making it the highest grossing film of 1999, the highest grossing Star Wars film, and the 7th highest grossing US Box Office film. The improved special effects make it difficult to believe that the entire pod race is computer generated (except for Annakin sitting inside a hydraulic cockpit).
Second chronologically, and the fifth release overall, Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones takes place a full 10 years after the events of The Phantom Menace. The first film to be shot entirely using a 24 frame HD digital camera, Attack of the Clones develops the relationship between Padme and Annakin against the increasing power of Chancellor Palpatine and the start of the Clone Wars. In addition we see the events that reveal Annakin’s dark side (the death of his mother by Tuscan Raiders) and begin his struggle with Jedi/Sith ideals.
Attack of the Clones also has the dubious distinction of not only being the lowest grossing of all the Star Wars movies ($640 million worldwide), but it is also the only one to be out grossed in its initial year of release (2002). Ahead of Star Wars II was Spiderman, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
The final installment of the prequel trilogy, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith was released on May 19, 2005 breaking severla box office records on its opening weekend, on its way to $848 million worldwide. Revenge of the Sith would be the highest grossing film of 2005 and the second highest grossing film in the Star Wars Saga. Here we see Annikin complete his fall to the Dark Side, but not out of lust for power, but out of his love for Padme, and his uncontrollable desire to save her life. The scene in which Padme gives birth to Luke and Leia, as Annakin is fitted with Vader’s mechanical biosuit (and takes his first mechanical breath) is both chilling and beautiful. Annikin’s fall to the Dark Side coincides with the birth of the children that will eventually save him.
Revenge of the Sith is also the only film in the Star Wars Saga in which George Lucas makes a cameo appearance. He is the blue faced Baron Papanoida, visible in the Coruscant Opera House seated outside of Emperor Palpatine’s box.
